How many of you recognize the title of this message from the Wayans Bros. sketch of Homey D. Clown on Saturday Night Live?
•Explain that Homey had to work as a clown as part of his prison work release program. So, he wasn’t your TYPICAL clown who chose that profession. As a result, there were many things he wouldn’t do - especially things that humiliated himself. When asked or expected to do those things, he would reply “Homey don’t play that!”
Many Christians are at least aware that they are called to live the culture of Heaven on Earth.
It’s a culture that is full of righteous, peace, & joy
This God-culture is a stark counter-culture to the mainstream culture of the world around us.
If & When we received the amazing gift of salvation and we were born again into the family of God:
We changed, but the world around us stayed exactly the same!
So, how do we live in a world that is so diametrically opposed to who we have become?
Where do we see it?
Where do we see it?
31 “To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other: We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t weep! 33 For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
What have you experienced when you let some folks know that: “Homey don’t play that?”
You know, when you told someone:
I’ve decided NOT to have sex before marriage
Yes, I always listen to my parents & honor their rules - even if they aren’t there & would never know
I’m choosing to not eat today, thanks.
I’d love to hang out with you, after I finish church & fellowshipping for a while.
We don’t do business on Sunday’s because we’ve chosen to give that day to God.
Yes, I return 1/10th of all of my income to God as well as offerings that are more than that. (We had an accountant tell us we need to stop doing that - we changed accountants)
Did you experience what the Bible said you would, especially as a Christian standing for doing things God’s way?
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

“The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Let’s think about who John the baptist was.....
No matter who you are, some people want you to be someone else.
I wanna encourage you with the title of a book by John Mason
You’re Born an Original, Don’t Die a Copy - John Mason
Or as the Character Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy says, “Ain’t No Thing Like me Except me!”
Find some friends who desperately want and encourage you to be exactly who Jesus created you to be; a 1-off!
That’s part of the very culture of Honor at The Ark - We don’t always do it perfectly, but we have a target!
WE SHOW HONOR
It’s about valuing people:
We celebrate the distinctive difference in others because we know God has placed gifts and callings in the heart of every person. We go beyond what is expected and use our words to speak blessing. We exhibit honor through purposeful investment in connection and relationships.
Now - We Live It:
Now - We Live It:
16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
That’s why the world doesn’t like you - if you live like Jesus
12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
I’ve got great news for you though:
2 Corinthians 9:8 WUESTNT - Moreover, God is powerful to make every grace superabound to you in order that, having always an all-sufficiency in all things, you may superabound to every good work,
Before I wrap this up I’d like to communicate that the following scriptures about who you are some of the very reasons why:
My parents often told us: “Others may, you may not.”
There are certain standards and behaviors that will simply be beneath you
The “Homey Don’t Play That” kind of stuff
Just like it is hard to imagine the Queen of England picking her nose, or picking a wedge in public - or shopping at Savers next to me & Pastor Jolie & Melani
There are some behaviors that should just be incongruent in the life of a child of the King of Kings
Don’t let every passer-by sample fruit from your tree, that fruit should belong to the one who buys the orchard.
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Just One Thing:
Just One Thing:
Embrace your God-given difference & know that God will give you all the grace you need to stand strong when you don’t dance to the beat of the world around you
You’re set apart for a special purpose!
Discussion Questions:
Discussion Questions:
What do you think could be done to improve the media?
What have you experienced when you didn’t do what others wanted you to do (especially when it was something related to Following Christ)?
Read Romans 8:16-17 and share what this scripture means to you & how it does/should affect the way you live your life.
